Babich’s friend Dave Brenha said the cause of death was not known but that Babich had been in the hospital recently. Babich’s wife, Barbara, died just a month earlier, Brenha said.Babich was a native of Youngstown, Ohio, who played high school football in nearby Campbell and then starred at Miami , where he was a first-team All-American and MAC Defensive Player of the Year in 1968. He was a first-round pick of the Chargers in 1969 and played every game for three seasons .
Traded to the Cleveland Browns in September 1973 for a first-round draft choice in 1974 and a second-rounder in 1975, Babich played the next six seasons for the Browns, missing only three games. Babich was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994, the first player from Miami so honored.
