Former Denver Broncos defensive coach Larry Coyer died Friday, his family announced in a statement. He was 79.
Coyer spent 2000-02 as a linebackers coach for Mike Shanahan and then served as the Broncos’ defensive coordinator from 2003-06. The Broncos made the postseason four times in Coyer’s seven seasons with the franchise.
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce Larry has passed away today after a sudden illness,” the Coyer family wrote. “Larry was a well loved man by many and we are processing this loss.” A West Virginia native, Coyer also coached for Tampa Bay, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh and the New York Jets in addition to many college and high school programs in a career that ultimately spanned from 1965-2014.
