Carney has served in the department since 2011 and was previously a member of Avondale's SWAT team. His swearing-in comes amid a sharp drop in the town's crime rates, ranging from a 25% decrease in thefts ― from 189 in 2020 to 142 in 2021 ― to a 20% drop in violent crime during that same timeframe.“I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead our dedicated team on the Paradise Valley force,” the newly appointed Carney said.
Wingert announced his retirement earlier this year to pursue a"national policy position," according to town staffers. The longtime law enforcement official has not provided any further details about what that national role is or whether he got the job. Paradise Valley Town Manager Jill Keimach described the new police chief as a"natural leader" with a"strong work ethic and a sense of justice." Mayor Jerry Bien-Willner echoed that sentiment.
