Apple may be offering a lot of love to the Mac platform, but if you are looking for a new MacBook, it might be better to wait.
As for the entry-level MacBook Pro, it still sits awkwardly between the all-rounder that is the Air, and the increased performance potential of the higher-specced Pros. It really is a curates egg that feels like its only purpose is to populate a price point, rather than solve a user’s pain point.
For anyone looking for the good all-round experience that wants it in an Apple product… that’s the role of the MacBook Air. With the introduction of Apple Silicon the stabilisers came off the ultraportable and it became both utterly practical and had enough under the hood to handle enough multimedia creation to keep consumers engaged.
Yet the MacBook Air was the first of the Apple Silicon laptops. It retained the old design with weak I/O ports, an anaemic screen with significant bezels, and was the first-generation that trialled the Mxx chipsets in public. The MacBook Air is very much due for an upgrade to match the MacBook Pro and iMacs of the world.
And that update is coming. Apple analyst notes that a redesign of the MacBook Air is expected later this year/ Not only will the physical design match that of the new MacBook Pros, but the splash of colour introduced by the iMac will come to Apple’s laptop range. Throw in two more years of software development and a better understanding of the physical needs of the ARM-powered laptop, and you have much better offering than the tired looking MacBook Air on sale in every Apple Store.
