The filibuster was not touched on in great detail in the meeting, according to Manchin and State Rep. Nathan Johnson of Dallas, despite the lawmakers’The Senate’s GOP minority used the filibuster last month toDemocrats’ sweeping election bill, which would roll back many state-level restrictions, expand mail-in voting and institute automatic voter registration on top of other provisions to increase ballot access.

Manchin suggested Republicans opposed the bill because it was too comprehensive – ”they had a bill that’s 800 pages long, they’ve had everything thrown at them,” he said – calling for more bare-bones legislation that “protects the basic right of voting.” Manchin and Johnson pointed to the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which aims to restore portions of the Voting Rights Act that were struck down by the Supreme Court that required certain states and localities to seek permission from the federal government to pass election laws, as a bill that’s more likely to pass.in his support for a bill to restore the Voting Rights Act – but the John Lewis bill has support from only one Republican, moderate Sen.
