Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has quashed speculation that a post-Brexit deal for Northern Ireland is imminent, admitting that negotiations are “tough and complicated”.
Mr Cleverly said that the negotiations were difficult but taking place “in good spirits with good faith” and he “hoped” the issue could be resolved. But he appeared to quell rumours of an imminent deal, stressing the talks would not be guided by “arbitrary deadlines”. He added: “We want to make sure all communities in Northern Ireland and their representatives including the Unionist community and the Unionist political parties are comfortable with the arrangements that are in place that underpins the Belfast Good Friday agreement.
“The bill is there, and the negotiations are ongoing but ultimately, I would say to everyone… we remain focused on the outcome rather than the method.” To get around this, the UK and EU negotiated the Northern Ireland Protocol, which allows goods to cross the Irish border without being inspected. However, hardline Brexiteers oppose the plans – and instead want him to proceed with the controversial Northern Ireland Protocol Bill, drawn up under Boris Johnson, which would give the Government the power to unilaterally rip up parts of the trading agreement without consent from the EU.
