National Weather ServiceA cold front will move through the Houston area Monday bringing showers and storms as early as late Monday afternoon. The weather service is calling for a 20% chance of rain after 1 p.m., increasing to 90% in the evening. The system could bring as much as an inch of rain to the Houston area.
The cold front is being compounded by Roslyn, a storm that made landfall in Mexico Sunday as a hurricane, but which had since been re-categorized as a tropical storm,. Although Roslyn is unlikely to make it out of Mexico, Lanza said moisture from the system could contribute to the likelihood of storms locally.
Storms are most likely to develop between late Monday into Tuesday morning, before sunrise. If storms do develop, Houston could potentially experience damaging winds and a few brief tornadoes, according to the weather service forecast. However, the risk of flooding is low due to the recent lack of rain and drought conditions in the greater Houston area, according to meteorologists.
Wednesday is currently expected to be dry, but more showers are expected later in the week. There is a 50% chance of rain Thursday night, kicking up to a 60% chance Friday, with the possibility of a thunderstorm with heavy rainfall.
