Hauling gravel and sand with our Ford F-150 Lightning for a DIY project has us rethinking some things.

One of the most vivid memories I have from my childhood is the time my brother Patrick and I helped my Papa build a new concrete swale in the backyard of his Virginia home. To be fair, I mostly remember being squeezed three across in the cab of his '89 Dodge Ram 100 as we returned from a gravel yard with our supplies.

With the F-150 Lightning's payload limitations in mind, I planned on three trips to the rock yard: one haul for the road base and another two with the sand split in half to attempt to avoid overloading the pickup. The first load of road base went smoothly. I pulled up to the yard, showed the loader operator my order form, fielded questions about the truck, and stood aside as three-quarters of a ton of gravel was unceremoniously dumped into the bed.

I grew more frustrated with the payload scales on my second trip to the yard. Mindful of running over our Lightning's payload capacity, I opted to split my 1.6-ton purchase into two loads of 1,640 pounds each. After a couple buckets of sand filled the Lightning's bed just above the wheelwells, I hopped back in and called up the scales to check the weight and was greeted by a bright red bar.

To the Lightning's credit, it wasn't squatting like my grandfather's old Ram, but I certainly felt the weight of the sand in back. The most noticeable changes were in how the Ford accelerated and braked. With 580 horsepower on tap, the truck never felt short of power, but without the weight of an engine on its nose, the F-150's front wheels would occasionally scrabble for grip on slicker patches of pavement.
