A community-driven solution to food insecurity in Sun Valley, Idaho.
Once a vacant barley field, the now 2-acre Bloom Community Farm¹ has sprung to life against the rolling hills of Quigley Canyon in Hailey, Idaho. The farm serves as a community hub for neighbors to learn how to grow, harvest, and take home a variety of vegetables — for free. Backed by the community non-profit, The Hunger Coalition, the organization understands the power of good food and designs spaces to bring hope and healing to their struggling community.
The face of food insecurity in Sun Valley breaks all stereotypes. The majority of individuals and families accessing The Hunger Coalition’s services have one or multiple jobs and work across nearly every industry. Baristas, landscapers, teachers, firefighters, business owners, healthcare workers, and grocery store clerks; single parents, seniors on fixed incomes, young families, and working professionals — all are struggling to keep food on the table.
Peter Phillips, 74, has lived and worked in the valley for over 40 years. Upon retirement, he heard about Volunteer for Veggies, and found it to be the perfect way to stay connected to his community and to the food he eats. Each week, he joins dozens of other volunteers to help weed, seed new crops, wash and bundle produce, and turn the compost pile.
