EXCLUSIVE: Scotland is facing a 20 per cent shortfall in the number of food safety officers across the country needed to inspect producers, shops and eateries.
A quarter of councils don't have enough food safety officers as Scotland faces a massive nationwide shortage, worrying stats reveal. Data seen by the Record from 27 of Scotland’s 32 local authorities shows there is a 20 per cent shortfall overall in the number of food safety officers .
She told the Record: “A shortage of food safety officers in Scotland is really worrying because of the vital role they play in making sure our communities have safe and healthy food. When it comes to food safety, cutting corners is not an option. The Record revealed how nearly one in six EHO posts were going unfilled - who deal with local eco problems from river pollution, contamination and substandard housing to vermin infestations. But that figure rises to one in five for food safety officers - and the problem could get worse in the coming years, as the FSO workforce is disproportionately older.
Shauna Clarke, an EHO for Edinburgh City Council, warned MSPs in May there is a “crisis” in the profession - partly driven by a lack of action in encouraging young Scots to take it up. They said the country faces a growing risk of “food fraud” as a result of leaving the EU - meaning food that is altered or mislabelled to dodge food safety laws.
