The University of Alabama returned a $26.5 million gift from a pro-choice donor and removed his name from the law school

Share to twitterUniversity of Alabama employees remove the name of Hugh F. Culverhouse Jr. from the School of Law sign.

The law has been harshly criticized by a major donor to the University of Alabama, Hugh F. Culverhouse. Culverhouse has donated so much money to the University of Alabama that it named its law school after him.the law a “trampling of the constitution,” “an attack against women,” and “an affront to the rule of law itself.” He has also called for out-of-state students to boycott the university until the abortion law is repealed or modified. Alabama has announced that it is returning his $26.

Nevertheless, it is difficult to believe that Culverhouse’s strong and public opposition to the Alabama abortion law did not play a significant role in the university’s decision to return tens of millions of dollars. Disputes between wealthy donors and their recipient institutions are commonplace.
