Backlund has played all 15 seasons of his NHL career in Calgary.
Earlier this summer, reports surfaced that Backlund was hesitant about committing long-term to the Flames following a frustrating 2022-23 campaign that fell short of expectations. Backlund said he wanted to compete for a Stanley Cup, and some wondered if he’d be traded during the offseason.According to Backlund’s agent, J.P. Barry, the Swede needed the offseason to consider his options.
