From next year, the current format of the Champions League will be scrapped. At present, 32 teams qualify for the competition and are split into eight groups of four teams. Each team plays their other group members twice, home and away, with the top two qualifying for the knockout rounds.
Teams from the same country could face each other in the play-offs or round of 16 stage. The round of 16 clashes will be decided based on seedings with first and second ranked teams on opposite sides of the draw. The extra spot will then be distributed to the team which finished fifth in England's case because we already have four qualifying spots. Using last year as an example, Liverpool would have qualified for the Champions League.
