There’s a belief that F1 drivers aren’t “athletes”. This is why fitness in F1 is so crucial to the sport.
It’s a well-debated topic. Many of the questions thrown around online and in conversation follow these sorts of ideas: Are F1 drivers really athletes? Why do they train so much if all they do is drive around in circles? Do they need to work out?By Definition A simple yet extremely common question. To help look at fitness in F1, we can first consider whether drivers are athletes. To answer this we must pick apart the definition of “athlete”. The good old Oxford Dictionary defines an athlete as:To further this definition, a proffesional athlete is defined as one who performs his/her skills at an athletic event and recieves a wage or other reimbursment. So, you could argue that F1 drivers are considered, by definition, as professional athletes.
Well, sport is commonly defined where it’s participants show physical exertion and skill. Time after time we see drivers sweaty and exhausted after a race so that’s the exertion box ticked. Even David Coulthard commented on it saying heSecondly, driving a normal car is considered a skill so being able to drive an engineering masterpiece at speeds over 300km/hour is defintiely a skill.
