It's nearly time for the big event!
It takes a team of 4,500 people to make the biggest metropolitan festival in the UK happen. Among them are 1,100 bar staff, 925 security, 600 wristbanders getting people in and out again, 250 police on site. End to end, there will be seven miles of steel barriers. The numbers are slightly bewildering.
In days gone by, it would be where the blue M&Ms got separated from the other colours and put in a crystal bowl, or where the puppies would be corralled before being unleashed into Mariah Carey’s dressing room. “As the years have moved on, people are more into their wellbeing, I do think artists are more conscious about alcohol consumption,” she says. “Some artists have gone completely alcohol free.
As we go in, a huge bank of monitors is being set up which will oversee every part of the festival via a huge network of CCTV cameras. It’ll spot everything from congestion to any outbreaks of anti-social behaviour, meaning it can be dealt with quickly. The safety of those who attend is ‘always at the forefront’ for the festival team. “You have 80,000 people in a field, there’s always going to be incidents,” he says. And that means having a sensible approach to all aspects of what going to a modern festival means.
