'This ain't meant for people who don't already have money.' Maxwell Frost, the first-ever Gen Z member of Congress, says he was denied an apartment in DC because he had bad credit, despite being told his credit score wouldn't affect his chances.

"Right now in Orlando, in my district, we have one of the worst affordable housing crises in the country per capita," Frost told Insider."This is actually something that I dealt with last year in the midst of the campaign. I was houseless for a month because our rent went up too much.

"The slowdown for the Washington, D.C.-area housing market in October was dramatic. We saw a year-over-year decline in sales activity that was a bigger drop than we saw back when the pandemic hit. Back then, we saw sales grind to a halt, but the decline we saw in October was even more dramatic than that," listing service Bright MLS Chief Economist Lisa SturtevantFrost received support from Twitter users who have also faced the difficulties of the rental market in DC.

"We need more housing, and we need more housing near opportunity, and we need more affordable housing near opportunity," Frost said.can be the make or break number for someone trying to purchase or secure an economic necessity, whether that's housing or a car. Credit scores are meant to be a neutral system, based on whether or not someone pays their bills and consistently uses credit, but research shows there's systemic inequities that can impact that scoring.
