Wayne “Bear” Brooks Jr. was remembered as a dedicated husband, loving father and brave firefighter.
Firefighters, law enforcement officers and elected officials convened at Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark on Friday to celebrate the legacy of firefighter Wayne “Bear” Brooks Jr., who died fighting a cargo ship fire last week.Brooks, 49, whose nickname was “Bear,” and his colleague Augusto “Augie” Acabou, 45, were killed after they were trapped ina cargo ship carrying vehicles that was docked in Port Newark.
Leslie Clark-Headley cut through the sorrow, calling for mourners not to linger on her cousin Brooks’ death, but instead to celebrate his life. Brooks was raised in Irvington. As a kid, he wasn’t much different from the “gentle giant” people knew and loved when he was an adult, said his childhood friend Oscar Estremera.
Brooks joined the Newark Fire Department in October 2006 after graduating top of his class. He loved being a firefighter and was never afraid of danger, Roger Terry Sr. said of his nephew.Firefighter killed in Newark cargo ship blaze was patient, strong and ‘wanted to help people’ In recognition of his years of service and sacrifice, Brooks was posthumously promoted on Friday to the rank of firefighter captain. His wife, Michele, was also presented with the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters Medal of Honor on her husband’s behalf.
“If Wayne was so vital to his beautiful wife, if Wayne was so respected and loved by his siblings, if Wayne was such a hero even to his own mother, if Wayne was the glue that kept this large family together, then why would a good, all-knowing, merciful God, take a young man at 49 years old?” Soaries asked.
