The fire displaced six residents and killed multiple pets, officials said.
OAKLAND – A blaze that broke out Thursday afternoon near Lake Merritt in Oakland left a firefighter injured, half a dozen people displaced and multiple pets deceased, officials said.
Around 3:15 p.m., crews were dispatched to the 300 block of Lester Avenue for a report of a fire at an apartment building, said Oakland Fire Department spokesman Michael Hunt. Hunt said the fire was knocked down by 3:45 p.m. and contained to the point of origin – a two-story, two-bedroom unit. An adjacent unit, however, suffered some damage.
Six people were displaced by the fire, Hunt said. Firefighters also found multiple pets dead inside the unit. Hunt said a firefighter suffered minor injuries when he fell through a floor. He was taken to a hospital as a precaution. A resident was also taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation.Crews have fire knocked down and continue looking for hot spots inside a 2 story / 2 bedroom unit. Fire contained to unit of origin with some exposure to an adjacent unit. No civilian injuries reported; one firefighter suffered a minor injury – will be transported for precaution.
