Finding the magic of Christmas in an old Dallas train depot | SharonFGrigsby

It’s a yearning that leads too many of us to break ourselves in half as we grasp at the brass ring of holiday perfection.

Model-train enthusiast Ron Siebler has brought his layout, a blend of old and new, to Old City Park in December for almost a decade. But for the many children and teens spellbound by the scene, the vintage train layout is a cool new thing. So much so that I counted more of them looking at the trains than photographing them.

The train layout at Old City Park is not nearly as sophisticated as what you’ll find at other local exhibits nor does Siebler ascribe to strict rules about what he allows into his design. The flying Santa is powered by an apparatus once used to turn a mirrored disco ball. The Ferris wheel is by Mr. Christmas, the ice skaters are Lennox, and Union Station is an American Flyer accessory.

As he took his turn running the trains — and regularly blowing the loudest whistle — Garrett told me this night is his favorite part of Christmas. Every so often, Siebler or fellow conductors Scott Young and Don Baynham cried out in pretend panic, “Oh, no, cow on the tracks, cow on the tracks. And there’s a train coming around the bend.”

Siebler, Young and Baynham are encyclopedias of obscure model train information and adept at diagnosing problems when gremlins bring a train to a mysterious halt. “I eventually lost the key but discovered that the one that worked on my skates also fit the train engine, so I was saved,” Siebler recalled.‘There’s enormous pressure’: A behind-the-scenes look at restoring the Dallas Holocaust Museum boxcar

That was the same year, 1989, Lionel began producing its series of American Flyer Christmas boxcars. Siebler now owns all 33, some of which are part of the show and others are on display on the depot shelves.
