A hot cup of cocoa and beautiful fall leaves are a few of Lorrie's favorite things about the cooler seasons.As the only Midwesterner in my household, I find the Texans in my family don’t quite understand why I look forward to the arrival of fall so much. Maybe it’s because, in this state, it’s usually not until Thanksgiving that the weather will regularly resemble the season.
When my father moved us to the South, I learned quickly that it would take longer for that chill to arrive, if ever. I didn’t get as much wear out of my heavy winter boots and heavy coats. I also had to adjust to the lack of basements and seeing a lot less snow. Still, I anticipated the cooler mornings, multicolored foliage, student “Fair Day,” children’s holiday specials and the seasonal flavors that hit the stores right before Turkey Day.
The dip in temperatures also makes it easier to walk around and visit more exhibits at the State Fair of Texas. It’s hard to be patient in those long lines for food, rides and attractions when you’re literally boiling in place.When it comes to school, Nia and Layla usually have a firm hold on teacher expectations, and the avalanche of online forms has slowed down to a manageable trickle instead of a hurricane-level deluge.
