After receiving hundreds of nominations, advisory committee announces 10 finalists in three categories
The winner — announced Aug. 20 — will become the focal point for what is essentially a months-long, region-wide book club, discussed during public events at libraries, schools and community centers.by getting people to reflect on the book’s ideas and their connection to life here. It’s in its 16th year locally. Sponsors include KPBS, public libraries and civic organizations.
Winners are chosen in part on themes that an advisory committee believes will resonate with local and/or global communities and people of all backgrounds. Last year’s selection was “Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist’’ by Judith Heumann . This year’s finalists include novels, memoirs, poetry and true crime. They are: “The Beekeeper of Aleppo” ; “Broken” ; “Call Us What We Carry” ; “Deacon King Kong” ; “Hollywood Park” ; “Infinite Country” ; “Interior Chinatown” ; “Killers of the Flower Moon” ; “The Overstory” ; and “The Vanishing Half” .An advisory committee — KPBS staff members, librarians, teachers and community representatives — selects the finalists after reviewing nominations from the public.
Among the criteria: The author must be alive; the book was published during or after 2017 and is still in print; and the book was professionally reviewed in a major publication. In addition to selecting a book for adults to read every year, the program also chooses titles for teens, kids and Spanish language readers. Finalists in those categories have been announced, too. The lists are available on the One Book, One San Diego
