Kirk Thomason has spent the past 16 years coaching golf at Montgomery High School.
Last month at the Region III-5A tournament at Golf Club at Margaritaville Lake Resort, the Bears’ second-place finish meant the streak of consecutive state tournament appearances continued at 27, seven of which have come during Thomason's time as head coach.
Last year at state, the girls team finished fifth, and four members of that team were eligible to return this year. The boys team finished fourth a week later and had some key guys returning as well. “I’ve always believed in fate and to have Jordyn come on the team this year, it was another reason,” Thomason said.
Thomason came to a meeting for his boys and all the sudden found himself as an assistant for the program. He eventually became head coach so that Herridge could focus more on the girls program, which was in the midst of an epic decade-plus of success. Thomason started teaching in 1978, but it wasn’t for another seven years before he became a high school golf coach. Having a specialized high school golf coach at most schools was a rarity during that era. Golf mostly was a spring sport that was coached by a football or basketball coach.
