'The fire was lit when I moved to Belfast, and hopefully it can just keep going.'
Nallaine Calvo moved to Belfast almost five years ago and soon started to feel disconnected from her roots.
After the success of this first supper club, she decided to set up KUBO during lockdown as a home business, dishing out Kamayan packs for people to enjoy at home. Soon after, Nallaine had a base at the Hill Street Hatch for a few weeks, where she was able to test out more Filippino dishes. "I was losing touch with my roots moving here. Not only because there was a lack of Filipino food, but the transition of everything, like moving to another city and working in a different job. So I decided enough was enough - I missed Filipino food and needed to reconnect with it, so organised a Kamayan event at Babel.
She said: "I grew up around the culture. My sisters and I are first generation Canadians, so we grew up with the Filipino language and food, so it was normal. It wasn't until I moved away I realised I took it for granted for all my life. "Even on our menus, we keep a lot of the language, so we'll listen to people trying to say the word and even if they say it wrong, I love it. I love that they're attempting to say that particular dish in the Filipino language."
"My dad built a Kubo in our own backyard in Toronto. It's the place where we had so many family gatherings, barbecues, and I've had a lot of beer pong sessions and parties with my friends there.
