With re-appraisals increasing home values in Franklin County by more than 40%, the auditor's office is seeing a surge in struggling homeowners applying for Home

stead Exemptions to help them pay for"This is not intended to property tax anyone out of their neighborhood," Franklin County Auditor Michael Stinziano said about the triennial re-appraisal required by state law. "A lot of the concern has been the property tax piece, which the auditor's office doesn't control."

For homeowners who need it, Stinziano's team is helping property owners file for a Homestead Exemption, which reduces the amount of property tax they'd have to pay. In the relief program, the state makes up the difference. At 41 years of age, Rivera applied for his exemption in the first half of 2023 since he is fully disabled and on a fixed income. He saw his mortgage decrease from the exemption in October."It wasn’t a serious struggle, but it was where things could be better," Rivera said. "It’s a relief. In my opinion, relief is relief."

The Ohio Department of Taxation told Problem Solvers the fewer dollars stem from past administrations waiving the income requirement to help give more benefits to more people. Now, the income requirement for most applicants is less than $40,000 a year.
