-- One person was killed and three others were injured in a fire in a residential building on Rockaway Parkway on Monday afternoon. The fire broke out on the top floor of the building, and broke through the glass and charred the windows. Video posted online showed flames spilling out the window. Of the injured, officials said two are facing serious injuries, and one person with minor injuries is expected to be OK. Chopper 2 is checking out various stories, including a fire in a bui.
Witnesses and FDNY officials told CBS New York's Hannah Kliger two people jumped from windows before firefighters arrived. They were rushed to nearby hospitals. "This guy jumped out the sixth-floor window, and I didn't know what else to do except talk to him and tell him everything was going to be alright," one witness said.
"Heavy fire on arrival on the top floor," said FDNY Deputy Chief Jim Carney."And especially, in this type of construction, one of the main concerns other than the obvious life hazard to the people who jumped who may be in the apartment is extension within the building." There's a lot of flooding and water damage. The FDNY said the fire was contained quite quickly and didn't get to spread past the top-floor apartment.
