The Fantastic Four's villain may seem goofy, but stories show he's actually an incredibly dark character defined by themes of abuse.

The Mole Man may be the Fantastic Four’s goofiest villain, but he harbors a dark side that makes him too grotesque to properly commit to film. While the Mole Man depicts himself as an outsider persecuted by society, he's actually a slaver who will sacrifice anyone and anything to get what he wants - even those who actually are vulnerable in the way he pretends to be.

The Mole Man is one of Marvel’s first villains, appearing in the first issue of the Fantastic Four. Once a human scientist, the Mole Man discovered a vast underground network of tunnels, along with the creatures that inhabit them. Bringing these creatures - yellow humanoids known as the Moloids - under his control, Mole Man began lashing out at the surface world, and his first attempt brought him into conflict with the Fantastic Four.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Mole Man Is a Mass Murderer In 1975’s 'None Are So Blind' - from Len Wein, Herb Trimpe and Joe Staton's Incredible Hulk #189 - Hulk finds himself in a remote, snowy area. The Hulk encounters a village under siege by mysterious creatures called “darklings.” Hulk agrees to help, and when he chases some of the darklings to their lair, he encounters the Mole Man.

Mole Man Looks Silly, But He's Actually Nightmare Fuel While the Hulk would go on to prove more than a match for the Mole Man, this encounter shows a dark and disturbing side of the villain. The Moloids mindlessly follow his orders, and he has so little regard for them and their welfare that he literally orders them to march to their deaths. However, the Mole Man doesn't reserve his disrespect for the Moloids, and has treated humans in much the same way.

Over the years, Mole Man has become a surprisingly potent representation for several dark concepts, cultivating a culture of abuse justified by his own sense of victimization. Mole Man sees himself as the lord of the dispossessed, which gives him free rein to spend their lives and dignity in service of his own whims.
