My summers were filled with the Cleveland Indians. Baseball made my physical pain lessen and loneliness go away … I sent letters to players, with actual letters sent back. One being from Mudcat, who was a Tribe broadcaster at the time.
“That’s how it started. One of my baseball heroes became my friend – puny sick teenage me. He went on to play catch with me to help strengthen my hand-eye coordination. He gave me bats, hats, gloves , autographs, tickets. But that was nothing compared to his talks and visits to the hospital. He also gave me his deep personal discussions about being tough, trusting God – even if it made no sense because I was mad or feeling abandoned.
