The funeral home had to stop the burial after the wrong person was put in the casket, the family says.
Kummi Kim, says the family wanted to honor her mother with a proper burial. But the funeral home placed the wrong person in the casket and the internment had to be halted. All the Kim family wanted was to give their matriarch, Kyung Ja Kim, a proper Christian burial when the Bergen County woman died last November at the age of 93.
“My mother lived a long life and she wanted her funeral to be a celebration,” her daughter, Kummi Kim, said at a news conference held at her attorney Michael Maggiano’s office in Fort Lee. “Her last wish was that everything would be at the church, the proper way. So I feel very guilty that we couldn’t give her her final wish.”
The funeral director, Gina Chong, “responded with a very clear expression of denial and dismay over the question as if if [Kummi Kim] did not appreciate a different appearance after death,” the lawsuit said. “Therefore [Kummi Kim] rationalized that the ‘altered appearance’ was attributable to the embalming process and application of heavy mortuary makeup, fake hair and/or some type of filler such as Botox.
“There should have been identification so you don’t confuse one Kim for another,” Maggiano said. “This was a complete system failure at its very core. Was it negligence? Certainly.” En route to Valhalla, Chong called Kummi Kim and offered to turn the funeral procession if she wasn’t confident that the body inside the casket was that of her mother. But Kim, who the lawsuit says was “confused and taken by surprise” at the offer, told Chong to proceed to the cemetery, the lawsuit said.
Eight months later, Kummi Kim said she feels “guilt, shame and humiliation” over not being able to carry out her mother’s wishes. It was important that the funeral service go smoothly, she said, “because it our last memory of her. But now we cannot erase it. So it is stain.”
