Abdel Hammad, 67, a transplant surgeon from Liverpool, crossed into Egypt after leaving Gaza early this morning
Abdel Hammad, 67, a transplant surgeon from Liverpool, had travelled to the border at around 7.30am Gaza time on Thursday ,But he and other foreign nationals, including UN workers, were then stuck in a holding area for several hours while waiting on a bus to cross through into Egypt, his son Salim Hammad, 34, a doctor from Oxford, explained.
Around 200 more UK or dual nationals remain trapped in Gaza, amid intense diplomatic efforts to allow them to escape.“It was kind of third hand through my mum. I think she got the call and she told us. It was just relief, really,” Salim told“I’ve just spoken to him now, he’s just waiting for the passport. He met people from the embassy at the Egyptian side, he is just waiting for his passport to be stamped and then he is going to get down to Cairo.
The Foreign Office is understood to be pressing at the most senior levels for all British nationals to be able to cross as soon as is practically possible. But so far only Dr Hammad and another Briton have appeared on two lists of hundreds of foreign or dual nationals allowed to leave the war-torn territory.
“Him and the rest of the UN delegates are waiting on the bus. You have to get on the bus to cross to the Egypt side.” But he was forced to move south to Rafah from Gaza City’s United Nations headquarters after the Israeli Defence Forces sent evacuation orders on 12 October., advised UK nationals that an embasssy team in the Egyptian town of Al-Arish, about 30 miles from the Rafah crossing, could provide consular support, including advice on reaching Cairo.
Salim said that nothing else appeared to have been communicated to his father on how to reach Cairo or flights home to the UK, adding: “It would be good if there’s more information.”to help UK nationals have been bolstered by the arrival of a rapid deployment team from the Foreign Office and psychosocial support experts from the British Red Cross.
