Familiar failings continue, new ones emerging as Padres lose again to Red Sox
Bob Melvin did not exactly rack his brain. He didn’t need to. He’d bench-coached for a team that won the World SeriesThe best Melvin can recall, none of those teams had gone through what the 61-year-old veteran is enduring on the Padres’ top step the last few weeks. Perhaps the closest was the year his Athletics lost the first six games of the season and then won 13 in a row to get back on track for … an 86-win season that missed the playoffs.
The runs scored off Musgrove provided two more chapters in this anything-that-can-go-wrong-will saga. Kim even followed Tatis’ home run with a double, but the next three hitters all produced outs. Xander Bogaerts’ was at least productive — a hard fly ball to right to move Kim to third with less than two outs — but Soto and Cruz both punched out as Chris Sale went on to strike out eight over seven strong innings. Boston’s bullpen recorded the final six outs, with closer Kenley Jansen stranding two ninth-inning walks when Brandon Dixon popped out to third to end the game.
