The whimsy of 242 Beach reflects the ingenuity of Jack Heidelberg, who designed and built 12 homes in Belvedere and Tiburon, according to his. “They weren’t all ‘storybook’ homes, but all were marvelously imaginative, and all provided rich material for the likes of Sunset Magazine editors and Hollywood producers,” it reads.
The first of the Heidelberg trio, 250 Beach was dramatic enough for a Hollywood movie location. With its 60-foot-tall fortress constructed from rock and cobblestones foraged from San Francisco streets, the building was a castle. The unique home was chosen as the set for"Sudden Fear," starring Joan Crawford, which was filmed there in 1952.
