Some flights resume after FAA halts U.S. departures to fix system outage
The Federal Aviation Administration lifted a nationwide halt of departing flights on Wednesday morning after a technology outage that delayed thousands of flights.
The system that failed sends messages to pilots, alerting them about equipment outages, hazards and closed runways, among other information. The FAA said early Wednesday domestic departures would be paused until at least 9 a.m. ET while the agency worked to restore the Notice to Air Missions System. All flights currently in the air were safe to land,More than 4,000 U.S. flights were delayed as of 8:30 a.m. ET, according to FlightAware, and residual delays could last hours from the backup once the ground stop is lifted.
By 8:15 a.m. ET, flights were resuming out of Newark Liberty International Airport and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the FAA said.
