It's absolutely baking on the continent right now
It may seem like the UK summer has been a bit of a let-down lately, with rain, clouds and thunderstorm warnings.
But as the rest of Europe bakes in a n extreme heatwave, some forecasters are warning similar temperatures could be heading further north. The heatwave, dubbed "Cerberus" by the Italian Meteorological Society has been named after the three-headed monster from Dante's Inferno. It has already taken a hold across hotspots in the Mediterranean.
Temperatures have already reached highs of 48C, the ECHO reports. Although this kind of intense heat is not expected to reach British shores, researchers are warning that high temperatures could turn our homes into greenhouses, particularly if global warming reaches 2C.Experts add that air conditioning could lead to a "vicious cycle" of high energy consumption, even though it would help us to feel cooler in the hot weather.
This is because they would face a greater number of days with extremely high temperatures. Dr Radhika Khosla, associate professor and leader of the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Cooling, said: "It has huge implications for public health and all sustainable development goals, including livelihoods, infrastructure, education, poverty and food and nutrition."
Concluding the report, as small increases in global warming are evidenced, it is thought that there is now a "need for immediate, unprecedented and localised adaptation."
