Maricopa County supervisors name a different Republican to Arizona House, restoring the 31st vote the GOP needs to control the chamber.
Bob Christie Capitol Media Services PHOENIX — Maricopa County supervisors appointed a replacement Friday for a state lawmaker expelled from the Arizona House last month, restoring the 31st vote House Republicans need to control the chamber and move bills without support from minority Democrats.
Harris, an outspoken critic of the county’s election system who contends former President Donald Trump was not defeated in Maricopa County and the state in 2020, had sought to be reappointed by the supervisors. She was the top vote-getter at a meeting of Republican precinct committee members from her district who were charged by law with providing the board with three names of potential nominees.
Sellers and the other three Republicans on the five-member board voted to appoint Willoughby, who is an emergency room trauma nurse. The sole Democrat, Steve Gallardo, opposed the appointment because like Harris, Willoughby says the county’s election system is flawed. Gallardo repeated that he could not support a nominee who rejects that."If they’re not willing to stand up publicly and to say what has been the big lie, the conspiracy, the unfounded claims, are exactly that, false, I can’t vote for them,'' he said."I just can’t.''
The supervisors have been criticized for taking more than two weeks after receiving the nominees to make their choice. "I'm very excited to get to work,'' Willoughby said after being sworn in by state Supreme Court Justice Clint Bolick on the House floor Friday afternoon.
