'There’s a weird but brilliant microcosm of Manchester in NOMA'
Just around the corner from the Northern Quarter lies NOMA - a part of the city centre that developers hope will take off in the same way that the NQ, Ancoats and Spinningfields all have in recent years.
The pub that serves NOMA - The Sadler's Cat, formerly the Pilcrow - is the product of volunteers too - 500 of them built everything 'from the inside out', from the bar stools to the pumps. New Century Hall, an iconic venue in the sixties, re-opened after a £10m revamp in 2022 as an arts and concert venue, and is another fixture. And the National Probation Service's flagship office is in the Redfern building.
It's all part of a project that dates back to 2011. Its progress is a study in what it takes to create a new neighbourhood and a new community, urban regeneration and placemaking - the art of managing public spaces so that they work for people. In 2017, the Co-op's partner in the scheme, investment managers Federated Hermes, bought them out. Now Federated Hermes and developers MEPC are trying to make it the next big place to live, work and socialise.
NOMA's architectural diversity is one of the things that makes it a 'microcosm' of Manchester itself. There's mid-century modern, in New Century Hall, the Edwardian baroque of the Hanover building, which dates back to 1905, both Grade II listed. “It isn’t like the Northern Quarter or even what Spinningfields is - our aim is for it to be known" New Century Hall, which once played host to the likes of Jimi Hendrix and the Rolling Stones, now features a kitchen featuring local food and drink vendors, a production house, and a 800-plus capacity concert venue across three floors.
And, with New Century’s calendar of events, which includes upcoming gigs and shows from the likes of The Darkness, Dream Wife, Tig Notaro, The Bluetones and House Gospel Choir, there's a clear 'go big or go home' mentality. “We are very good friends with Material Source - a designer studio and co-working space for artists. When we first moved in, they let us work from there and have our board meetings there. That’s really the feeling of NOMA, it’s a neighbourhood. It encourages us to work together and alongside each other."
“The area we are in really feels like it is up-and-coming. We did a soft opening giving out free coffees and I think we did 200 around that day. Considering it was a really hot day, the footfall was crazy. "I really feel like NOMA could be that next big step, we’re at least hoping so. It’s a walkable distance from the city centre to go for some coffee or 'egg and soldiers' in the morning.”
