, the Australian Baseball league club announced last week. A former fifth-round pick of the Yankees, Bird will spend 2023-24 ABL season with the team.Bird, 30, was picked in the 2011 MLB Draft as a catcher and transitioned to first base before making his major league debut for the Yankees in 2015.
With a sweet left-handed swing that hit to all fields, he hit 11 homers in 46 games that season while taking over for Mark Teixiera, and many projected him as the Yankees’ first baseman of the future. But, because of injuries, he never panned out. Bird, who has played in only 186 major-league games, missed all of 2016 recovering from shoulder surgery and then most of the 2017 season due to a right ankle injury that led to another surgery. He hit three homers in the 2017 postseason as the Yankees advanced to the ALCS, where they lost in seven games to the Houston Astros.
Bird played just 10 games regular-season games in 2019, his final season in the majors, because of another foot problem — a plantar fascia tear. Over four years with the Yankees, he slashed .211/.301/.424 with 32 homers. In 2020, Bird signed with the Texas Rangers. He also spent time in the minors with the Phillies, Rockies and Blue Jays before returning to the Yankees to play for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2022. With the RailRiders, he was .218 with six home runs and 22 RBI.“It’s a place I have always wanted to visit and to go and see the country while playing the game I love will be amazing,” Bird said via the Aces’ website.
