The ex-gynecologist was a renowned cancer specialist who prosecutors claimed preyed on his patients.
Disgraced ex-UCLA gynecologist James Heaps was sentenced to 11 years in prison Wednesday, nearly two years after he was indicted for sexually abusing his patients while working at the university.
The assaults date from 2013 to 2017, the portion of his tenure that falls within the statute of limitations for which criminal charges could be brought. “I’m still living with a lot of anxiety. I’ve gone to some very dark places in my thoughts,” Jane T. said in a written statement that was read in court before the sentencing.
After he serves his sentence, Heaps will be required to register as a sex offender. He has already served more than a year in jail awaiting trial. Heaps’ defense attorneys asked the court to consider his extensive career as an oncologist and gynecologist.
