Former big-league player, coach took over Eagles midway through 2022 season; influence has been a 'blessing'
An eight-year major league veteran infielder-outfielder who spent two yars with the Padres, he should never have coached in the big leagues. But COVID-19 hit that season, and Newhan’s job changed. He worked with some of Pittsburgh’s top prospects, including Cal Mitchell and Oneil Cruz, as they spent time on the major league taxi squad.
Nico Newhan hit .530 at Maranatha last season, up from .341 as a sophomore. He finished the 2022 season with 12 home runs, 54 RBIs and a San Diego Section-leading 61 hits, becoming only the 10th player in section history to top the 60-hit mark. Four of those 10 — Nick Noonan , Eric Chavez , Sean O’Sullivan and Adrian Gonzalez — played in the big leagues.
Hale, a national champion player with the Wildcats in the 1980s, personally sold the Newhans on the program. Of course, Hi Corbett Field helped. The off-campus facility was the longtime Spring Training home of the then-Cleveland Indians and, later, the Colorado Rockies. Beyond the right-field wall is a hitting facility donated by Cleveland manager Terry Francona, a former Golden Spikes Award winner with the Wildcats. Arizona consistently ranks among the Pac-12’s leaders in attendance.
“The fact is I spent every spring and summer at the ballpark,” Ross Newhan said. “So naturally, baseball was a way for me to be closer to my son.
