NEW: Ex-Minneapolis police officer sentenced to 12.5 years for fatal shooting of Australian woman who had called 911 to report a possible sexual assault.
Former Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Noor was sentenced on Friday to 12 and a half years behind bars for the fatal 2017 shooting of Australian bride-to-be Justine Ruszczyk Damond.
In April Noor was convicted of third-degree murder and manslaughter. He was found not guilty second-degree murder. But the court also heard from multiple people who said that Ruszczyk Damond's death had altered their lives forever. Damond's son, Zach Damond, who was 22 at the time of the shooting, said his stepmother-to-be"cared for me and loved me unconditionally."
Noor, a two-year veteran at the time of the shooting, had pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.
