Ex-FDA chief on vaping: Hooking new generation of kids not worth benefits to addicted adults
told CNBC on Thursday that the surge in kids using flavored nicotine vapes is an "urgent" need that needs to be addressed.
Gottlieb referred to the National Youth Tobacco Survey, which showed Wednesday that kids are increasingly using e-cigarettes. In 2018, 27.5% of youths reported using e-cigarettes, compared to 20.8% in 2018. Just three years ago, in 2016, the number was at 11.3%. The Food and Drug Administration is currently finalizing its guidance to remove all non-tobacco flavors of e-cigarettes, including mint and menthol, from the market within 30 days. Companies might be able to reintroduce their flavors at a later date, so long as they submit a formal application and receive approval from the FDA.
