'Back to Andie, the perennial source of my discontent. I blame a lot of my romantic failings on this character. For she is a woman who I have forever longed and failed to become,' says one Vogue writer on the lessons she learned from the 2004 rom-com.

No man would go running from Andie Anderson. In fact, she could probably “barf all over him and he’d say, ‘do it again!’” These are the words spoken by Michelle Rueben inIn case you somehow missed the cult 2004 rom-com, it follows glossy magazine writer Andie and hot-shot advertising executive Benjamin Barry as they navigate romantic challenges, or HR nightmares, depending on how you look at it.

Today, this well-known trope has been torn apart ad nauseam. A construction of womanhood according to the male gaze and totem for sexual oppression, the Cool Girl has now been dismantled more times than it has been upheld. The former was done most famously by the author Gillian Flynn in her bestselling 2012 book“Cool Girls never get angry,” she writes. “They only smile in a chagrined, loving manner and let their men do whatever they want.

Andie embodies everything about these tropes. And that would be completely fine if the film didn’t reward her behavior in the most obvious terms. The whole idea for Andie’s article was inspired by Michelle, her friend who has just been dumped by a man named Mike. “Why does this always happen to me?” she weeps, noting how she’d told Mike she loved him after two days, cried after the first time they had sex, and proceeded to call him obsessively in the days that followed.

Lo and behold, her plan works. On their first date, Andie and Benjamin wind up going out for lobster. She eats with her hands, drinks beer from the bottle, and responds to him with one-word sentences, not revealing anything about herself in a way that gives him space to fill in the gaps with his own fantasized version of who she is. Her energy is calm, confident—and, crucially, masculine. Benjamin is instantly hooked.
