Detective Chinatown's movies vary in quality.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The Detective Chinatown franchise contains three films, each of them carrying its own distinct merits and shortcomings. Detective Chinatown is a Chinese comedy-mystery franchise following the escapades of Qin Feng and his "uncle," Tang Ren. The films were met with immediate success in China, and by the time Detective Chinatown 3 was released in 2021, it had garnered huge support in the United States as well.
Detective Chinatown 3 also suffers from a lack of character development. The first two films seem to have solidified the franchise's main characters, Tang and Qin, leaving them with little room to grow meaningfully. It also falls into the category of detective movies where you can solve the mystery yourself, which isn't necessarily a problem unless it feels obvious.
Detective Chinatown 2 picks up where the first movie left off by continuing Qin's character development. At this point, he has confidence in his abilities because of the events in the first movie, but he is not taking on the world-saving-vigilante role that he fills in Detective Chinatown 3. He does not have as much room to grow as he does in the first movie, but he is definitely more dynamic than he is in the final installment.
