Even with the polar vortex, the Midwest had a winter that was about average
One of the most memorable things about the cold snap much of North America experienced at the end of January 2019 was just how predictable the reactions were with regard to climate change. Every time it gets cold—without fail—folks who refuse evidence that climate change is real will go on a tear insisting that the cold weather proves that it’s all a hoax and we’re really cooling off, instead.
That cold snap was a particularly cold one as far as wintertime chills go. International Falls, Minnesota, fell to -46°F and -45°F on two mornings at the end of January. Chicago’s O’Hare Airport recorded a low temperature of -23°F after a day that only reached -10°F for a high. Both of those readings were, respectively, among the coldest low temperatures and coldest high temperatures on record for the Windy City.
The cold air stuck around in the north-central United States for several days before a complete reversal in weather patterns led to an and daytime highs more than 20°F above normal. Chicago swung from a high temperature of -10°F on January 30 to a high of 51°F just five days later.that the cold outbreak disproved climate change.
