Leaked letter says Manchester business is suffering because of how expensive it is to get to London
One of the government's own ministers has warned that Northern businesses are suffering - and the region's economic growth is being held back - due to the 'current condition of our rail network'.
He told The Northern Agenda: "The current fare structure which is employed charging only northerners peak fare charges, means that northern parents, unlike parents who live in the south, wanting to get home at a reasonable hour to their children means that have to pay a premium of up to £350 for dinner, bath time or to read them a bed-time story.
"I would be grateful if you could share the measures being taken in your department in response to the above issues so that I might revert to the company with assurances that action is being taken to resolve them." The government says it is no longer prioritising faster connections between the north and south of the country and instead will save the £36bn saved from HS2 on smaller transport projects that can be delivered more quickly. Mr Richardson said the current commercial model 'means travelling to London and back on two peak time trains is almost equivalent to sending a team member to Europe or even the States'.
"We want to make it easier for people to travel by train and find the best value ticket for their needs, which is why we introduced our Superfare ticket that offers those who can be flexible with their plans a one-way journey from the capital to Manchester for just £20.” "We are committed to levelling up and since these concerns were raised, we announced Network North which will drive better connectivity across the North and Midlands with faster overall journey times, increased capacity on the West Coast Mainline and more frequent, reliable services across the rail network.
