Despite a strong performance (and beard) from Chris Evans, Defending Jacob is achingly familiar
, challenges that assumption, slowly teasing out the possibility that this kid actually did what everyone says he did. Though softer than the book’s truly grim ending, the closing episode of the series is rather daring, especially in light of all the pretty square, by-the-book stuff that’s come before.
This is perhaps the rare mini-series that should have been a movie, rather than the other way around. All the good is packed in at the end, and it takes seven lugubrious hours to get there. It’s all for nought, really: the show’s attempts at legal system vérité are too often scuttled by some solar flare of melodrama, whether it’s a cliched “Burn in hell, murderer!”-style message spray painted on the side of the once-perfect house or a soapy digression into Evans’s character’s past.
