At the Santa Barbara Film Festival, Oscar nominees Jamie Lee Curtis, Angela Bassett, and Cate Blanchett sat down for in-depth conversations about their careers and recent work.

Both Bassett and Blanchett had studied acting in school—Bassett graduated from the Yale School of Drama, while Blanchett is a graduate of Australia’s National Institute of Dramatic Art—but Curtis never had any formal acting training. “I am not an intellectual,” she said. “I respect the art and the craft. I respect people’s process. I understand some people have to go to those great lengths to get to that work.

Her acting pedigree actually starts from birth, as the daughter of actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh . She said she had the advantage of knowing what to avoid with her career, so she was determined to avoid being pigeonholed into the horror genre after the success of“I watched both my parents deal with pigeonholing, and I knew that if I had continued doing horror films, I would not get to do other work,” she said.
