'The water (works) is disconnected,' columnist roysj writes. 'Disconnected from itself. Disconnected from so many of its 200,000 customers.'
Disconnected from itself. Disconnected from so many of its 200,000 customers. And in the not-too-distant future, most likely disconnected from collecting sewer fees for Jefferson County.
Birmingham Water Works General Manager Michael Johnson addressed frustrated customers at a town hall convened by Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson. Alabama state Rep. John Rogers was among those seeking answers to high bills. There were plenty of seats at the Boys & Girls Club. Curiously, the only empty seats were at the front of the room, among those reserved for board members.
Similarly pre-scheduled was board member Tom E. Henderson, appointed by the Jefferson County Mayors Association. “It’s not like I wasn’t interested in attending,” he said while making a beeline for Tyson, whereupon the two appeared to engage cordially for several minutes. Williams Barnes, president/CEO of the Birmingham Urban League echoed. “Your absence was noted,” he said. “You didn’t get a chance to hear from citizens. As board members, you should be there to support your staff. Among the citizens, trust is an issue. Fixing it starts by showing up and showing you care.”Johnson called the Tyson-hall meeting a “success,” noting that more than 40 customers present had their billing questions addressed that night by customer service employees on site.
