Eight-time European champions Germany have attacking options at their disposal going in to WEURO2022. But issues with fitness and form at the back could dent their chances. The tournament looks wide open, but so does their defence. 📝 honigstein
men’s team, for her progress. “She’s only beginning to find out how good she is and how good she can be,” a member of the delegation tellsThings could get nervy in a far less positive sense at the back, however. There are problems throughout the back four and possibly in goal, too, where veteran keeper and popular TV pundit Almuth Schult, 31, of Angel City FC has lost her place to Merle Frohms in the wake of injury and giving birth to twins.
The full-back berths are problem positions, too. Bayern’s Giulia Gwinn is a little out of form on the right. Voss-Tecklenburg has repurposed Eintracht Frankfurt striker Nicole Anyomi to help out there, but against top opposition that move appears risky. Felicitas Rauch , the latest in a long list of hopefuls for the left-back role, has improved but perhaps not quite enough for a side wanting to go far in England.
The uneven distribution of quality players on the pitch makes it hard to predict the side’s performances this month with any degree of certainty. Going forward, they seem to have enough to consider themselves “definitely ready to win the competition”, as Frohms put it. But their issues at the back could easily put paid to any dreams of an extended stay at their Brentford base.
This schism, in a team that was formerly so collectively dominant, adds yet another layer of complexity to a tournament that looks like throwing up half a dozen serious contenders and almost as many despondent big-name losers. Euro 2022, Germany feel, is wide open. The worry is that they will be, too.
