Girls will not be offered equal football in PE despite the Lionesses’ victory and this week’s political rhetoric
… but that girls can be offered the chance to play a “comparable” sport instead. Hello netball, hockey.
Why does this matter? Because only 44 per cent of secondary schools offer girls equal access to football lessons. After Sunday night’s jubilation, the Government, the FA, Women’s Super League clubs, headteachers, grassroot teams, high-profile players and, yes, the media have a responsibility to capitalise on this chance to turbo-charge the women’s game. We can’t just bang on about “the legacy” as if it will magically happen.Would offering girls the chance to play football pose resource challenges in some schools? Yes. Would headteachers and PE departments groan at another central dictat? Of course.
The Department for Education does have several initiatives to improve sporting participation among secondary school girls. It’s aware of the problem.
