“Because of the title, people like to say it’s about the fascination with youth. But I was a peer,” says Ethan James Green. We talked to the photographer about his new book, “Young New York.”
In 2008, aspiring photographer Ethan James Green, then 18, moved from Michigan to New York City to work as a fashion model. He ended up posing for photographer David Armstrong, who became his mentor and inspired Green to explore portraiture.
Green focused on fellow members of New York’s queer community. These images, shot from 2014 to 2018, make up Green’s first monograph, Young New York, published by Aperture. “It’s about celebrating people for who they are,” says Green, 29, “allowing them to be seen as they want to be seen.” WSJ. asked Green about his project and how his work comes together.
